Ukraine withdrew from the fight against the Uyghur genocide, and by doing so, it is shooting itself in the foot – a human rights defender

Our country risks losing the support of some allies in the midst of the war with the Russian Federation.

Ukraine became the only country in Europe that refrained from supporting the resolution on the fight against the genocide of the Uyghur people in the UN Human Rights Council. This decision will have negative consequences for our country, which is currently defending freedom in a war with Russia.

Three votes were needed to pass the resolution. Great Britain, Japan, the USA, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Finland, Lithuania and the rest of our allies fought for it. Against – Libya, Benin, Gambia, Malawi, Mexico and India, who seek “neutrality” on the issue of crimes against humanity.

< p>The Uyghurs take a pro-Ukrainian position in the Russian-Ukrainian war, since February 24 they have been supporting Ukraine with rallies, donations, and diplomatic work, reminds human rights activist Artur Kharitonov.

Uyghur human rights defenders recognize the actions of the Russians as genocide, and this is a significant contribution to our position at the world level. Since the Uyghur genocide is a reflection of the Holocaust and the Holodomor, the voices of the Uyghur victims of the genocide are important.

Ukraine's reluctance to support the resolution in the US can be interpreted as a kind of “curt” to China – the document was widely supported by the “anti-China lobby”, which is no bigger than the “anti-Russian lobby”.

Losing the support of this community is especially dangerous on the eve of the US midterm elections. According to the results of the elections, the majority in the House of Representatives may be won by Republicans, among whom there will be many Trumpists who are in favor of reducing financial support to Ukraine.

This vote also deals a blow to the image of Ukraine as a symbol of freedom and a fighter against absolute evil, on which holds the lion's share of international support, arms supplies, sanctions against Russia, etc.

However, the most striking, according to Kharitonov, is the moral aspect. The people experiencing the most terrible crimes in Europe after 1945 cannot close their eyes to the ongoing, most systematic and most cynical genocide of modern times in East Turkestan. The People's Republic of China publishes dozens of anti-Ukrainian narratives every day and provides all possible support to the Russian Federation. There would be hysteria – that's all. That is, we simply harmed ourselves and our allies,” he explains.

Kharitonov criticized the idea that “it is impossible to insult China, because then it will support the Russian Federation.” China already supplies products for the Russian military-industrial complex, buys energy resources from the Russian Federation, blocks or does not support decisions in support of Ukraine, etc.

However, China is forced to act carefully in order not to fall under the prying sanctions of the United States. The open speech of the People's Republic of China in favor of the Russians will lead to devastating sanctions and the transformation of support for Ukraine by states that define the “Chinese Communist Party” as the main enemy.

The human rights activist illustrated the post with a photo of 46-year-old Uyghur woman Khavangul Tevekkul, who is a prisoner of one of the Chinese concentration camps.

“Did she see how her daughter was forcibly sterilized? How was her mother raped? How did you shoot your husband or son after torture? Or how did the communists break into my father's shop, looting the enterprise for the benefit of the party, or destroying Islamic symbols for the sake of portraits of Xi Jinping?” Kharitonov writes.

During the six months of Russian aggression against Ukraine, expectations that Beijing would use its influence on Moscow and play a constructive role in ending the war were not fulfilled. China looks at the Russian-Ukrainian war exclusively through the prism of its own confrontation with the USA.
