“He's not kidding when he talks about the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological and chemical weapons because his military is, you could say, pretty ineffective.”
President Joe Biden said that the US is trying to find “way out” for Putin and are concerned that histhreats to use tactical nuclear weapons are real and could lead to Armageddon. The American leader believes that these threats are almost the biggest risk of this kind since the Cuban crisis, writes Reuters.
“He's not kidding when he talks about the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological and chemical weapons because his military is, you could say, pretty ineffective,” Biden added. – I don't think there is such a thing as the ability to easily use tactical nuclear weapons and not end up with Armageddon,” Bloomberg quoted Biden as saying.
“We're trying to figure out what Putin's solution is? – said Biden – Where will he find himself in such a position that he will not lose not only face, but also considerable power in Russia?”
Putin renewed his nuclear threats, announcing the annexation of Ukrainian territory and the call-up of 300,000 reservists.
“When the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people,” Putin hinted quite straightforwardly in a televised address to the country, before, as expected, mentioning the nuclear threat from the West.
The National Security Council disagrees with Biden
It's worth noting that Biden's comments differ from those of national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who said last week that the U.S. viewed Russia's threat to use nuclear weapons as the latest in a series of similar warnings that Putin has used since the invasion began in February.
“At this time, we see no signs of imminent use of nuclear weapons,” Sullivan said. – Of course, we closely monitor this and maintain close consultations with allies and partners.”
