Japan plans to reset imports from Russia – the government will announce today

The Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida said that Japan plans to impose additional sanctions against Russia over its war crimes in Ukraine. This was reported by Kyodo. To this end, the government is holding consultations with G7 partners. The statement came hours after the United States announced new sanctions, including a ban on investment in Russia.

Later, Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda added that Japan was likely to abandon Russian coal as part of another package of sanctions.

“We will continue to work to reduce our dependence on Russia by promoting diversification of energy sources, including renewables and nuclear energy,” Hagiuda said.

Earlier it was reported that Japan has not given up a joint gas project with Russia on Sakhalin. The share of Russia in the total volume of imports of liquefied natural gas to Japan is about 8%.
