The Ukrainian people will win, but the West should unite its efforts – Johnson

The British Prime Minister reminded that the darkest hour is before dawn.

Prime Minister of Velika Britain's outgoing Boris Johnson has admitted in a column for Mail+ that the next few months will be difficult for the country, primarily due to huge electricity bills.

“And yet, I will never again was not so sure that we will get through this successfully – and that Britain will come out of this crisis stronger and more prosperous,” writes Johnson.

The politician invites readers to remember who is to blame for the jump in prices and what exactly is at stake. The Prime Minister reminds that the world should have started to come to its senses after the coronavirus pandemic, how the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine.

Johnson calls the attack on our country “vicious” and “irrational.” And he continues: “It was Putin's barbaric invasion that scared the energy markets. It is Putin's war that is costing British consumers dearly. That's why your electricity bills double.”

And Putin, reminds the British Prime Minister, is well aware of this. He considers European politicians soft and expects that sanctions will be lifted from him in exchange for Russian oil and gas. The Russian leader hopes that Europe will stop supporting Ukraine and start putting pressure on Kyiv, in order to force the Kremlin to concede.

The prime minister calls such a decision “complete madness.” “In this brutal struggle, the Ukrainian people can and will win. And Britain, too. Every month, Putin's position is getting weaker and weaker. His ability to intimidate and blackmail diminishes. And the position of Great Britain will become stronger,” writes Johnson.

The Prime Minister reminded that Britain is reducing its dependence on Russian hydrocarbons, is increasing its own gas production and no longer imports fuel from the Russian Federation.

“With each new wind farm, with each new nuclear project, we become less vulnerable to the vagaries of world gas prices and less vulnerable to Putin's pressure.” – adds the politician.

Johnson warns against concessions to Putin, reminding that connivance will provoke the Kremlin's aggression against other states, which it considers a legitimate part of the empire. Other states will learn this lesson, leading to a new round of political and economic instability around the world.

“This is why we must continue to support the Ukrainians – and their military successes remain impressive. (President of Ukraine) Volodymyr Zelenskyi showed that his country, in principle, cannot be defeated. It is time for the West to double its support, not to doubt it,” he notes.

According to the Prime Minister, Britain has enough resilience to survive the difficult months ahead. “We have already shown it. Our recovery can and should be impressive, and our future will be golden,” the politician emphasized.
