The Red Cross is not a club with privileges, it has obligations: Zelensky called on the organization to take action

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the International Committee of the Red Cross can gain access to the captured Ukrainian defenders in Olenivka and should seek to do so. In his evening address, the head of state called on the organization to take logical actions.

He said that today there was an online meeting of the Ukrainian team working on the release of prisoners of war with representatives of the Red Cross and other international organizations related to the process .

According to Zelenskyi, important things were heard there that relate to the institutional work of the ICRC in guaranteeing the safety of captured Ukrainians.

“I believe that the International Committee of the Red Cross is not a club with privileges, where earn salaries and enjoy life. The Red Cross has obligations, primarily of a moral nature. The mandate of the Red Cross must be fulfilled. It is necessary to immediately do what is completely logical for the Red Cross,” the president emphasized.

In particular, he recalled the colony in Olenivka – “actually a concentration camp where our prisoners are kept” – and noted that Ukraine needs access to their citizens, the possibility of which was discussed earlier. Zelensky is convinced that the Red Cross can get it, but must try to achieve it.

“Ukraine is ready to contribute to this. The mission of the Red Cross can work on the model of the mission of the IAEA. But this requires leadership. Conscientiousness is required. We need to understand who created such an institution as the Red Cross and for what purpose,” concluded the head of state.
