Steinmeier believes that Putin and Russia's military command should be held accountable for crimes in Ukraine – Spiegel

The German president has admitted that he relied in vain on Putin's rationality.

Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and the rest of the military leadership should be tried for war crimes in Ukraine. He said this in an interview with Spiegel.

Spiegel : Putin's troops have apparently committed horrific war crimes in Ukraine. Should there be a Hague tribunal over Putin and Lavrov?

Steinmeier : Everyone who is responsible for these crimes must be held accountable. This includes soldiers. This includes military commanders. And, of course, those who are politically responsible. “

Mr Steinmeier also added that he “hoped in vain for Putin's rationality”. He said that Putin in 2001 and Putin in 2021 were very different.
