Шольц предлагал Зеленскому отказаться от НАТО, чтобы «не злить» Путина – WSJ

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz suggested that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky abandon the prospect of our country's membership in NATO and adopt a neutral status so as not to “provoke” Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to attack, writes The Wall Street Journal.

“On February 19 in Munich, Scholz told Zelensky that Ukraine must renounce its aspirations for NATO membership and declare neutrality within the framework of a broad European security treaty between the West and Russia,” the article said.

According to the publication, the agreement was to be signed by US President Joe Biden and Putin, and they were to become the guarantors of Ukraine's security.

Zelensky disagreed and called not to trust Putin, the newspaper writes. In a conversation with Scholz, the President of Ukraine also reminded that the majority of Ukrainians support joining NATO.

The response has prompted German officials to worry that the chances of peace are fading. But Scholz's aides believed Putin would not invade Ukraine, preferring military pressure on the borders and suffocation of the economy.
