New sanctions against Russia — what the EU is preparing

Currently, the strengthening of restrictive measures against the aggressor country is being discussed.

The European Union is considering limiting prices for Russian oil, tightening of restrictions on the export of high technologies to Russia, and strengthening of sanctions against certain individuals connected to the Kremlin. This was stated by diplomats on Thursday in response to the nuclear rhetoric and measures announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin, including partial mobilization. The West considers this a new escalation in the war declared by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, Reuters reports.

EU foreign ministers at a special meeting on the sidelines of the UN negotiations in New York agreed to prepare new sanctions against Russia, which will consist of economic and individual restrictive measures.

The head of the EU executive, the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that the sanctions will include additional high-tech export controls.

Three EU diplomats in Brussels said that the new sanctions will focus on caps on oil prices, which would be in line with the limits agreed by the G7 countries.

“We also expect more individual sanctions to be implemented,” said one of the diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He added that the oil restrictions should come into effect in December, along with the EU embargo on Russian coal. The EU believes that stricter restrictions on the export of high-tech products should limit Russia's military capabilities.

Further restrictions on the export of luxury goods from Russia were also considered. Poland and the Baltic countries seek to ban the import of Russian diamonds and confiscate Russian assets frozen in Europe.

However, this initiative is unlikely to receive the unanimous support of all EU countries, which is necessary for the introduction of sanctions. restrictions on Moscow by some member states could slow down the process.

The European Commission is expected to present a written proposal next week and the EU's 27 national leaders could approve it when they meet in Prague on October 6-7.
