Over a hundred politicians, public figures, businessmen and activists addressed an open letter to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi with a request to reconsider the decision on deprivation of citizenship of the head of the Dnipro Territorial Defense Staff Hennadiy Korban. Dnipro mayor Boris Filatov published the corresponding document on his page.
In particular, Zelenskyi is asked to instruct the Commission on Citizenship under the President to conduct an investigation on this issue.
“These actions have nothing to do with the law, they grossly violate Article 25 of the Constitution of Ukraine, which directly states: “A citizen of Ukraine shall not may be deprived of citizenship… A citizen of Ukraine may not be expelled from the borders of Ukraine…”, says the address to the president.
Its authors state that depriving Korban of citizenship harms Ukraine's authority, and point to Korban's “significant and undeniable” contribution to the defense of Ukraine.
“We hope that you will hear us and correct the situation. Now more than ever, the unity of government and society is needed, the unity of all Ukrainians for the sake of the Victory of Ukraine in the holy War of Independence.
And everything that prevents this – political games, settling personal accounts, everything petty and inconsistent with the law and state interest – should be rejected or at least postponed,” the text of the document reads.
Among the signatories of the document, in addition to Filatov himself, are Dmytro Yarosh, Vitaliy Klitschko, Stepan Khmara, Yuriy Lutsenko, mayors of a number of cities, a number of famous cultural figures and others.
“I never thought that so many people would support our the initiative People who are completely different, who sometimes have absolutely nothing in common. But we are a nation that feels injustice acutely,” Boris Filatov commented on the letter.
