“Let's not get our hopes up”: The White House on Putin's desire to end the war

The Biden administration is certain that in order to end the war, Russia should simply withdraw its troops, and not accuse its allies of supporting Ukraine.

The United States of America does not harbor hopes that the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, who recently decided to increase the size of the Russian army, is going to end the war in Ukraine in the near future. This statement was made by White House national security spokesman John Kirby in an interview with the Russian TV channel “Rain”.

“This is not a war with the USA, this is not a war with NATO. Putin chose to start a war with Ukraine and Ukrainians. And, unfortunately, nothing from what we observe today allows us to have any hopes that he is ready to put an end to this war, to the killing of peaceful Ukrainians,” said John Kirby.

In response to accusations by Russian politicians that the war is being dragged out by the supply of weapons to Ukraine by the US and its allies, Kirby replied that the war is only being dragged out by Putin's wishes continue it, and Ukraine has the right to defend itself

“He [Putin – editor's note] could end the war today if he agreed to withdraw his troops and voluntarily sit down with Zelensky at the negotiating table to discuss ending this conflict,” said a White House official.

Regarding the negotiations between Zelenskyi and Putin, he said that Ukraine has every right not to go to them on Russia's terms and to demand the liberation of its territories.

“Of course, Zelenskyy should decide for himself whether he is ready for negotiations, and we should respect him as the supreme commander,” he said. – It is obvious that in recent days Putin has also demonstrated that he is not interested in this. But Putin could end this war tomorrow, even without negotiations, if he simply withdrew his troops from Ukraine and recognized its sovereignty”.

Recall that in the same interview, Kirby stated that the US does not consider it necessary to completely ban visas for all Russians. According to him, the States believe that there are enough visa restrictions for citizens of the Russian Federation who support the Putin regime and directly affect its functioning, but massive similar sanctions should not be introduced.
