Paris prefers to adhere to a philosophy of containment.
France will not respond with nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear attack Russia to Ukraine. This was stated by President Emmanuel Macron in an interview with public broadcaster France 2.
“Our doctrine is based on the fundamental interests of the nation. They are clearly defined and will remain unchanged even in the event of a nuclear attack on Ukraine. Containment works. And the less we talk about it, the more they trust us,” he said.
At the same time, Macron emphasized that France helps Ukraine defend itself, but does not enter into a conflict with Russia.
“We don't want a world war, we don't go to war. We plan to install radars, systems and missiles to protect Ukrainians from drone strikes and Russian missiles,” he said, emphasizing once again that France had never helped Ukrainians attack Russia.
“We are not participants in the war,” he concluded.
For the first time, Macron commented on the subject of a potential nuclear attack on Ukraine and France's strategy. He added that currently, despite Putin's threat, there is no evidence that Russia is moving nuclear assets.
To the host's question whether Russia is a terrorist state, Macron replied that it is a task of international justice to qualify it.
