Direct violation of the Geneva Convention – Russia has no right to mobilize citizens in the occupied territories

Russia once again ignores international law.

In parallel with the preparations for the “pseudo-referendum” in the temporarily occupied territories , Russia is forcing the mobilization of the population to participate in the war against Ukraine. Such actions are another violation of international law by Russia, according to the British Ministry of Defense.

According to Ukrainian intelligence, the occupiers plan to involve Ukrainian citizens from Kherson and Zaporizhia regions in hostilities. However, such a decision by the Russian leadership is a direct violation of Article 51 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

In this context, the term “protected” refers to the civilian population in the occupied territories.

Therefore, any actions of Russia in this direction will be perceived as a violation of international law. Earlier it was reported that the Russian occupiers plan to conduct a “census” in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.
