China to impose sanctions on US defense chiefs over arms sales to Taiwan

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the sanctions are being implemented to protect the country's sovereignty and security interests.

The Chinese government intends to introduce sanctions against the heads of American military-industrial companies Raytheon Technologies and Boeing Defense due to potential arms sales to Taiwan. This is reported by the Global Times with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.

These are Raytheon Technologies CEO and Chairman Gregory Hayes and Boeing Defense President and CEO Ted Colbert.

Ministry Spokesman Mao Ning stated at the briefing that the sanctions are being introduced to protect China's sovereignty and security interests.

Beijing believes that the sale of US arms to Taiwan is a gross violation of the principle of “one China” and the provisions of the three Sino-US communiqués.

The sale of arms seriously undermines China's sovereignty and security interests, causes serious damage to Sino-US relations, and and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. China strongly opposes and condemns this, Mao Ning said.

He also stressed that China calls on the United States and relevant parties to end arms deals with Taiwan and stop the creation of tensions in the region, noting that Beijing will continue to take all necessary measures to firmly protect its sovereignty and security interests amid the development of the situation.

< On September 2, the administration of US President Joe Biden officially notified Congress of its intention to sell arms to Taiwan for $1.1 billion, The Washington Post reported. Armament sales include 60 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, 100 Sidewinder missiles and support for a surveillance radar system.

According to Reuters, the main contractor for Harpoon missiles is Boeing. Raytheon is the prime contractor for both the Sidewinder and the radar system.

In February, China decided to take countermeasures against Raytheon and Lockheed Martin after the US announced a $100 million sale of upgraded Patriot missiles to the island of Taiwan. The companies will be punished according to the provisions of China's Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.

The law specifically allows Beijing to take countermeasures against those who “interfere in China's internal affairs.”

Countermeasures include visa denials, entry bans, visa invalidation, deportation, arrest and freezing of assets, as well as a ban on transactions with national organizations or individuals.
