China plans to annex Taiwan by 2027 – CIA

Despite this, American intelligence believes that Xi Jinping is not interested in military action.

Tensions around Taiwan are constantly rising due to the military exercises of the Chinese army around the island and the position of the US, which supports Taipei with weapons. The position of the PRC remains unchanged: Taiwan is part of China and will never gain full independence. Xi Jinping aims to annex the territory by 2027, but does not plan to use the army, CNN reported, citing CIA Deputy Director David Cohen.

According to the source, the Chinese leader does not want to annex Taiwan militarily, but still sees the need to create the prerequisites for such a scenario.

“He has not yet decided on a military invasion, but he has asked his military to create the conditions where he could do so if he wanted to. “Intelligence still believes Xi's interest in Taiwan is to gain control through non-military means,” Cohen was quoted as saying by journalists.

< span style="font-weight: 400;">Beijing has publicly stated that it intends to reunite Taiwan with the Chinese mainland through peaceful means. In a white paper published in August, the Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to non-military measures, but reserved “the option to use all necessary methods.” The CIA believes that the situation around the island will worsen in 2027.

As for Taiwan, they reject the “one country, two systems” approach proposed by China. Taipei said that only the people of Taiwan will decide their future.
