Despite the overwhelming support of American public opinion for Ukraine's heroic struggle against the racist invasion , there are still people in the United States willing to listen to Putin's propaganda. But according to the American author of ZN.UA Anna Brodsky-Krotkina, this handful of far-left and far-right politicians who support Russian propaganda and Russian policy speaks of the ideological weakness of Putin's authoritarianism, not its strength.
The Russian propaganda was supported by the Democratic Socialist Group, which includes Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortes and Senator Bernie Sanders. Members of the group, echoing Russian rhetoric, accused the United States of invading Ukraine and demanded NATO's disbandment: “The United States must put an end to the imperialist expansionism that paved the way for this conflict,” they said.
Ilhan Omar, a well-known representative of the Minnesota Congress from the Minnesota Congress, spoke in a way that reflected Putin's interests and rhetoric. She publicly condemned Russia's aggression, but disagreed with the supply of weapons to Ukraine and predicted “catastrophic and unpredictable consequences” on the grounds that, in her opinion, “weapons are handed over to paramilitary groups who are not responsible to anyone.” She also did not support “broad sanctions” against Russia. Omar voted against a bill banning the purchase of Russian oil.
From the right wing, Putin's position was supported, for example, by 26-year-old Republican congressman Madison Couthorne, known for his pro-Hitler sympathies. Couthorn disapproved of President Zelensky and said the Ukrainian government was promoting “new-fangled Western ideologies.”
Georgia's Republican Congresswoman, Taylor Green, a proponent of popular conspiracy theories and a staunch supporter of Trump, also supported Russian propaganda and Russian interests . Unlike her colleagues in Congress, who greeted Vladimir Zelensky with applause, she rejected his calls to support Ukraine just hours after the Ukrainian president's speech. In a video echoing the familiar narratives of Russian propaganda, Green said “both sides” are responsible for the invasion.
It is significant that Putin and his propaganda in the United States are supported only by political marginals occupying extreme left or far-right positions.
On the American front of the information war, Putin, despite a well-established lie machine, is suffering a serious defeat. According to a poll conducted from March 7 to 13 by the PereResearchCenter, Americans are not indifferent to the fate of Ukraine, and its support is only growing.
Today, only a third of Americans (32 percent) believe that the United States is providing enough assistance to Ukraine in the fight against the Russian invasion. A much larger proportion of Americans believe that the United States should increase its support. Members of both parties support sanctions against Russia and an increase in the number of American troops in NATO countries neighboring Ukraine.
More than eight out of ten Democrats, or 88 percent, and 85 percent of Republicans are in favor of maintaining tough economic sanctions against Russia. And at least six out of ten in each party – for long-term maintenance of the toughest sanctions (68 percent of Democrats, 61 percent of Republicans).
In addition, half of the Americans of both parties consider the Russian invasion of Ukraine a “serious threat” to US interests and security.
