Self-identification of Ukrainians has risen sharply since August last year.
Absolute majority of citizens of Ukraine , namely 91% do not support the thesis that “Russians and Ukrainians are one people.” Today, only 8% have such an opinion, although in August 2021 there were 41%, and in March 2022 – 21%. Such data from a poll were published by the Rating Group.
Support for the idea of ”unity of peoples” is still recorded among 23% of Eastern residents and 13% of older respondents. On the other hand, in other macro-regions and age groups, support for this thesis is almost non-existent.
Also, most Ukrainians believe that “friendship between peoples” is impossible even after the war.
In general, since August 2021, when Ukraine celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of restored independence, the number of respondents who identify themselves as citizens of Ukraine has increased significantly – from 75 to 98%, and as “Europeans” – from 27 to 57% .
Instead, fewer and fewer respondents speak of themselves as “Soviet people”, their number has decreased from 21 to 7%.
Civic identity today dominates in all age and regional groups. Regarding pro-European self-identification, there are practically no differences in age fractions, but there is a certain difference in identification in the regions, but even there the indicators do not differ much from the all-Ukrainian ones.
