The US will leave an aircraft carrier near Taiwan amid China's military exercises

Washington also postponed a planned test of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The Pentagon decided to leave the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier near Taiwan “to monitor the situation”, as China plans to launch missiles in this region as part of military exercises, Politico reports.

In addition, the US has postponed a planned test of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile to avoid escalating tensions, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. The Minuteman test was scheduled for this week at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and has been postponed for a short period.

“While China engages in destabilizing military exercises around Taiwan, the United States is instead demonstrating the behavior of a responsible nuclear power, reducing the risks of miscalculation and misperception,” Kirby noted.

In response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, Beijing launched live-fire military exercises, launching missiles and deploying warships around the island.

The USS Ronald Reagan is based in Japan and operates in the western Pacific. In recent days, a US aircraft carrier has been sailing in the East China and Philippine seas.
