The UN has set up a commission to investigate Russia's war crimes in Ukraine

Following the work, the commission must submit a report.

The head of the UN Human Rights Council, Federico Villegas, has appointed members of the commission to investigate war crimes committed by Russia during the war against Ukraine . Their responsibilities will include collecting and analyzing evidence of violations and abuses, the UN Human Rights Council said in a statement.

The establishment of an independent international commission to investigate the crimes of the Russian Federation against Ukraine is provided by Resolution №49 / 1 of the Human Rights Council of March 4, 2022. The statement also notes that the commission will include three experts appointed by the head of the organization.

The members of the commission were:

  • Eric Messe from Norway (head of the commission) – former head of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Investigation of Genocide in Rwanda;
  • Jasminka Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a former judge and now human rights ombudsman in her country;
  • Pablo de Greiff of Colombia is a former justice adviser to international organizations and director of the Transitional Justice Program at New York University.

The Commission will collect, summarize and analyze evidence of violations and abuses, including their gender dimension, and systematically record and store information, documentation and evidence: interviews, witness statements and forensic materials, in accordance with international law.

It is noted that the commission was established for a year. As a result of its work, it is due to submit an oral report in September 2022. By March 2023, the commission must prepare a written report and submit it to the UN General Assembly.
