The Red Cross is ready to go to Olenivka and called for immediate access to the prisoners

The organization asks the world and the parties to the war to support its efforts.

The International Committee of the Red Cross stated that a long time ago are ready to send their representatives to the colony on the territory of temporarily occupied Olenivka, but cannot force their way there. The organization called on the warring parties to immediately and unimpededly allow their mission to all prisoners of war. This is stated in the relevant statement published on the website of the ICRC.

The message states that the Red Cross shares its disappointment over the lack of access to all detained citizens (probably referring to the disappointment of Ukrainians — ed.).

“Since February, we have been working to gain access to check the conditions and treatment of prisoners of war and to inform families about their loved ones. We have been able to visit hundreds of prisoners of war, but there are thousands more that we have not been able to see,” the organization said.

There it was emphasized that, in accordance with the Third Geneva Convention, the parties to an international armed conflict are obliged to grant the ICRC immediate access to all prisoners of war and the right to visit them regardless of the place of detention.

Our groups on the ground are ready — and have been ready for months — to visit the Deer Colonyand any other place of detention of prisoners of war. However, apart from enabling access at high levels of government, this requires practical arrangements to be implemented on the ground. We cannot forcefully gain access to the place of detention or internment, unless we have received permission,” the statement explained.

The Red Cross also recalled that all countries have made commitments to respect the Geneva Conventions, so providing access to prisoners is a legal obligation for them.

“Our mission can only be achieved through coordinated efforts with the parties to the conflict. And we ask them and the international community to support the role assigned to us,” concluded the International Committee of the Red Cross.
