The Philippines refused to buy Russian military helicopters, Associated Press

The Philippine government feared possible sanctions from the US

< p>The Philippine government has canceled a 12.7 billion peso ($227 million) deal with Russia to buy Mi-17 helicopters that was signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte, who recently resigned. The reason is Russia's war against Ukraine and possible US sanctions. This is reported by the Associated Press.

“We may face sanctions,” former Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told the Associated Press.

According to him, the American security services were aware of Manila's decision and could offer similar heavy-duty helicopters for the Philippines' military use.

Philippines Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez also told AP that the deal was canceled because Manila could face possible sanctions if the helicopter deal goes through.
