The deputy minister of justice is not sure that Russian prisoners of war at home have the same conditions as in captivity

While the hostilities are going on, the authorities are preparing for legal wars.

in Ukraine. In particular, according to Deputy Minister of Justice Olena Vysotska, probably not all Russian prisoners of war have the same conditions at home as in captivity in Ukraine. She told Tatiana Bezruk about this in an interview for ZN.UA readers.

“I am also not sure that they have the same conditions at home as we have in captivity. This is our principled position, and Ukraine will then become an example for the whole world why it is worth handing over work with prisoners of war to the civilian ministry. Because we are, first and foremost, professionals and lawyers. And while the hostilities are going on, we are preparing for legal wars,” said Vysotska.

According to the Deputy Minister of Justice, the undisputed fulfillment of the norms of international humanitarian law will help the country, even in the current regime, to preserve the face of a civilized country that was attacked by the Russian Federation, as well as to receive aid and military-political support.

“The emotions of our people we we understand and share, but we have to do our job,” she explained.

According to her, Ukraine will also have to be responsible for this line of work, just not now.

“And our arguments “look at them!” simply will not work in international courts. Unfortunately. Emotions are triggered only now and in social networks. It does not work in legal institutions. A specific case, specific conditions of detention of a specific prisoner will be considered, and all arguments – about the terrorist attack in Olenivka, about torture, about everything that Russia is doing to our heroes – will not be legal arguments,” Vysotska said, adding that there would be “no a moral judgment, but only a legal one”.

“So we are doing our work on the legal front. Point. We receive criticism from our citizens for this, but experts and the international community understand very well why we do it,” the Deputy Minister of Justice stressed.
