The Czech Republic and Poland pledged to protect the skies of Slovakia after the transfer of MiGs to Ukraine

Slovakia is waiting for the delivery of F-16 from the USA.

On Saturday, Poland and the Czech Republic signed an agreement on the protection Slovakian airspace until Bratislava decommissions its Soviet MiG-29s, potentially freeing up older aircraft for deployment to Ukraine.

The NATO allies' oath of protection will remain in place until Slovakia will not receive new F-16s from the US, which is expected to happen in 2024.

Slovakia said it is ready to send 11 MiG fighters to Ukraine, whose armed forces have long relied on Soviet-era equipment and turned to NATO countries for additional supplies.

Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad told reporters at an air show on Saturday that Bratislava is still ready to send planes to neighboring Ukraine, but no deal has yet been reached. “There is political will, and it makes sense to help those who need it,” Nad said. “The possibility is being discussed and as soon as an agreement is reached, we will inform you,” reports AFP.

Western countries and their allies are increasing military aid to Ukraine with money, equipment and training as part of the more than six-month conflict with Russia.< /p>

Slovakia, with a population of 5.4 million people, has already transferred S-300 air defense systems, Mi series military helicopters, self-propelled howitzers and Grad rocket launchers. It announced this week that it would send 30 BVP-1 tracked infantry fighting vehicles.

Nad, who valued the MiGs at around 300 million euros ($299 million), said Slovakia would seek some financial or material compensation for its donations to support the modernization of its armed forces.
