Moscow is rebuilding Soviet bases in the region and deploying modern weapons there.
The United States and NATO should strengthen cooperation in response on the growing activity of Russia in the Arctic, believes the Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg. At the same time, he reminded, the Arctic region is of strategic interest to many countries, not only Russia.
“Moscow is rebuilding Soviet bases and placing modern weapons there, for example, hypersonic missiles. China is also showing increasing interest in the Arctic. China is also showing increasing interest in the Arctic,” he emphasized in an interview with Welt.
The Alliance should increase its presence in the region, Stoltenberg believes. Washington also plans to appoint a special representative from the Arctic who will promote US interests and strengthen relations with allies in the region.
