Scholz called referendums on territories occupied by Russia “unacceptable”.

Planned referendums on joining Russia in the occupied territories are not covered by international law.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he does not recognize of “fake referendums” that Russia is going to hold and in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

“It is quite clear that these fictitious referendums are unacceptable,” Scholz told reporters in New York in Tuesday. They are “not covered” by “international law and agreements reached by the international community,” Welt quoted him as saying.

On Tuesday, mock referendums on joining Russia were held in the Kherson, Luhansk and Donetsk regions. They will take place from September 23 to 27. In Zaporizhzhia, the occupation forces control 75 percent of the territory. The simultaneous mock referendums are seen as a reaction to the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the east of the country.
