The obtained satellite images showed that fires were raging in the exclusion zone on an area of 10,111 hectares. In total, there are now 31 outbreaks of major fires. This was reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.

Fires are not always the cause of fires. As it turned out, the Russian occupiers are burning forests and ravines. Such hostile actions increase the level of radioactive air pollution.

“Prior to the large-scale Russian invasion, the radiation background in the exclusion zone was monitored using an automated 39-point radiation monitoring system. At present, such control and extinguishing of fires is impossible as a result of the occupation of the exclusion zone by Russian troops, “the Ministry of Environment said.

It is possible to monitor the fire situation thanks to satellite images from NASA and the European Space Agency ESA.

“However, due to the limitations of the Earth's remote sensing data used by our specialists, we do not rule out the existence of a significant number of smaller sources of ignition,” the ministry said.

Available data show that 31 outbreaks of large fires have formed in the exclusion zone. They covered natural ecosystems as well as abandoned villages of the Exclusion Zone.

“Thanks to the favorable weather conditions, the fires are now extinguishing themselves. However, due to a number of factors, an increase in the number and area of fires is forecast in the near future. We do not rule out that under favorable conditions the fires will reach catastrophic proportions in 2020, “the Ministry of Environment stressed.

As of March 26, the following fires have been localized:

  • Denisovichi forestry – 4 centers, approximate area of fire – 724.22 hectares;
  • Kotovskoe forestry – 11 outbreaks, affected natural ecosystems and resettled villages Bober, Pukhovo, Novaya Markovka, Shevchenkovo, Kotovskoe, Zhovtnevoe, Vladimirovka, Tarasy and Polesie. Approximate area of fires – 7672.35 hectares;
  • Korogodskoe forestry – 10 outbreaks, affected natural ecosystems and resettled villages Stechanka and Cherevach. Approximate area of fires – 549.29 hectares;
  • Detyatkovo forestry – 4 centers, natural ecosystems and the resettled village of Rossokha were affected. Approximate area of fires – 359.32 hectares;
  • Lubyanka forestry – the fire covered natural ecosystems and areas of the resettled villages of Buda and Tolsty Les. Approximate area of fires – 771.87 hectares;
  • Paris forestry – area of fires – 34.24 hectares.
