The US Department of Defense says that Russia has changed its priority goals.
During the month of full-scale war in Ukraine, Russia fired more than 1,370 missiles on Ukrainian territory, said a senior official of the US Department of Defense, writes ABC News.
According to him, the attack on Kyiv has stopped, although Russian troops continue to fire at long distances, and the priority target is Donbass and Mariupol.
“There (in Kiev, ed.) Static situation on the ground, except that we continue to see how the Ukrainians are defending the city and trying to repel the Russians,” – said the official.
According to him, Russian forces are now focused on operations in eastern Ukraine. The official described the movement of Russian troops southeast of Izyum as “gradual progress” toward Donbass.
“We are not quite sure what is behind this change of priorities. All I can tell you is what we see,” the official said.
The United States believes that this may be an attempt to cut off Ukrainian troops east of the rest of the country in order to gain leverage over future peace talks or refocus their strategic goals.
As for Mariupol, the Russian ring around it is shrinking, but there are persistent battles inside the city.
