Remembrance and Reconciliation Day: the history of the holiday

The holiday is celebrated on the day of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945.

May 8 in Ukraine marks Remembrance Day and reconciliation, in which Ukrainians honor the memory of those who died during World War II. The holiday is celebrated annually on the day of the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. It was established in Ukraine to honor the heroism of the Ukrainian people and their contribution to the victory of the Anti-Hitler Coalition.

History of the holiday

The Act of Surrender of Nazi Germany was signed in Reims (France) on May 7, but ratified only on May 8 in Berlin. On this occasion, large-scale celebrations were held on May 8 in many cities in Europe and the United States.

History of celebrations in Ukraine

From 1945 to 2013 in our country celebrations dedicated to the end of World War II were held on May 9 . Parades and demonstrations were held on this day.

In Ukraine, the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation (remembrance of the victims of World War II and reconciliation between the countries participating in World War II) was established in 2015. The symbol of the holiday is a red poppy.

Ukraine is currently living in a full-scale Russian invasion. The Russians are firing artillery, bombing aircraft and launching cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities, killing civilians and children.

Occupying forces are specifically terrorizing and killing civilians in Ukraine in violation of international humanitarian law. This was stated by the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom Barbara Woodward during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
