History of the holiday >

According to biblical tradition, myrrh-bearing women are women who have dedicated their lives to serving Christ. The names of seven women are known, but there were more. The most frequently mentioned scripture is Mary Magdalene, who lived a sinful life before meeting Christ and was possessed by seven demons whom he cast out. Mary repented and followed Christ. By the power of her faith, she stood out among other myrrh-bearing women.

Among the myrrh-bearing women is also mentioned Maria Kleopova, the mother of the future evangelist Matthew. Also known are Mary and Martha, sisters of Lazarus the Four-Born, who was resurrected by Jesus four days after his death.

These women renounced the past and followed Christ everywhere as their Master. At the time of the crucifixion, they were with him, supporting the Virgin, and later accompanying the body of Jesus to the burial place.

After Christ's death, women did not renounce him like the Apostle Peter. On the third day, they came to the burial place of their Master with the aromatic oil of myrrh, from whose name the “myrrh-bearer” comes.

The oil was part of the burial rite. The women wanted to pay their last respects to Jesus, but were unable to do so because the tomb was empty, Christ is risen.

Easter greetings “Christ is risen!” Mary Magdalene was the first to say. It was she who told the apostles about the resurrection of Jesus.
