< p>The day before, the European Commission proposed to the Council of the EU to launch the “money for the rule of law” mechanism in relation to Hungary. A positive decision on this matter would mean the suspension of about 7.5 billion euros in payments to Budapest due to corruption. As stated in the European Commission, “the decision was taken to ensure the protection of the EU budget”.

Now the Council has one month to decide on the adoption of such measures by a qualified majority. In exceptional cases, this term can be extended by a maximum of two months. This is the first time in the history of the EU that the mechanism for protecting the community budget against corruption has been applied.
