New Zealand increased sanctions against Russia

The country is ready to provide further military assistance to Ukraine if Kyiv's needs match its reserves.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand< /strong> Nanaya Makhuta has announced that 19 new members of Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle will be subject to financial sanctions and travel restrictions as part of a coordinated global response to Russian aggression, The Canberra Times writes. Since the beginning of the war, New Zealand has imposed sanctions against about a thousand people.

New Zealand's Defense Minister Pini Henare said that the country is ready to provide further military assistance if Ukraine's needs are matched by its reserves.

In particular, in response to a question about whether New Zealand was considering further military support for Ukraine, Enare noted that currently the requests do not match “according to our current assessment and according to the requests at the donor meetings in which I participated”.

< p>“They asked for HIMARS, surface-to-air defense systems, as well as surface-to-sea defense systems,” he said.

To date, New Zealand has sent 1,066 body armor to Ukraine, 473 helmets, 571 camouflage vest and belt.

Wellington agreed to allocate NZ$21.1 million in military funding, NZ$8 million in humanitarian support and NZ$2.3 million in legal and administrative support for the International Criminal Court and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that her country is committed to continuing to support Ukraine, but this is accompanied by practical and logistical limitations.

“Ukraine has made it very clear that the most important action we can take to help is our sanctions and support in the war, as we continue to do,” she said.

Ardern also met with by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal in New York last week during the UN General Assembly.

Ukraine's aid is widely supported by the country's opposition parties. Opposition leader Chris Luxon said that the country should expel the Russian ambassador.

“The expulsion of the ambassador sends the right signal, given that we are far beyond diplomacy. It seems unacceptable to have the Russian ambassador here while these atrocities are taking place in Ukraine,” he said.

Ardern refused such a step, saying it was “one of the least significant actions” that could be taken.
