Monkey pox: The WHO has reported a sharp increase in the number of infections in Europe over the past two weeks

Mostly men suffer from the disease.

In European countries, the number of monkeypox cases has tripled over the past two weeks. This was reported by the Associated Press, referring to the director of the European Regional Office of the WHO Hans Kluge.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 5,000 cases of monkeypox infection have been recorded in 51 countries. Kluge claims that the number of infected people in Europe is about 90% of the total number. So far, monkeypox has been detected in 31 European countries.

The director of the European Regional Office of the WHO added that monkeypox is mostly men. They make up 99% of the total number of infected people. Due to the sharp increase in the incidence, Kluge called on European countries to make more efforts in the fight against the virus.

Let us remind you that monkeypox is a double-stranded DNA virus of the same genus as smallpox. . It was discovered in the 1950s in Africa. It infects mainly the inhabitants of the African continent. Despite its name, the virus is more common in rodents than monkeys. According to research, there are two main types of monkeypox: one common in West Africa and the other in the Congo River basin. More mortality is observed from the latter.
