Lukashenko signs law that would allow Belarus to shoot for “attempted terrorism”

According to human rights organizations, such legislative changes could be used for political pressure.

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko signed amendments to parliament approved Of the Criminal Code. Now Belarus will be shot for plans to carry out a terrorist attack or assassination of politicians. This was reported by Radio Svoboda.

Articles under which Belarus can be convicted to death not only for the acts committed, but also for “attempt to commit an act of terrorism”:

  • Part 3 of Art. 126 (act of international terrorism committed by an organized group or with the use of nuclear energy or radioactive substances, nuclear materials, highly toxic chemicals, biological substances, or a combination of murder or murder of a state or public figure of a foreign state for provocation);/li>
  • Part 3 of Art. 289 and Part 2 of Art. 359 (murder of a statesman or public figure committed in connection with his activities in order to influence decision-making by the authorities or obstruct political or other public activities, as well as intimidation of the population and destabilization of public order).

Previously, the promotion of such legislative changes was associated with the phenomenon of “rail guerrillas”.

It is reported that the House of Representatives voted in favor of the amendments on April 27.

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the Viasna Human Rights Center, and the Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty Group issued a public statement declaring the extension of the death penalty unacceptable. According to them, legislative changes can be used for political pressure.
