Finland and Sweden have applied for NATO membership

Finland and Sweden submit letters today

On the eve of the decision to join NATO, the Finnish Parliament approved 188 votes in favor and 8 against, and was approved by the government and President Sauli Niiniste.

“This is a historic moment that we must seize,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a brief ceremony in which Swedish and Finnish ambassadors to the Alliance handed in their application letters, each in a white folder embossed with the national flag.
