The war in Ukraine has forced non-aligned states to reconsider their security priorities.
The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that neighboring Finland will soon apply for NATO membership. This was stated by Minister Ann Christine Linde on SVT.
According to the Swedish Foreign Minister, the non-aligned status of both Scandinavian countries has significantly reduced tensions in the region, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine has forced them to consider other security guarantees.
“Sweden and Finland were non-aligned militarily. This has served Sweden well and contributed to stability in our region. But if Finland joins NATO, it will no longer work. In this case, we have to draw our own conclusions and make decisions. If one country joins NATO, the balance will be upset, “Linde said.
The representative of Sweden also answered in the affirmative to the question of the likelihood of Finland's alliance with the Alliance. Linde said it was “safe to say.” As for Sweden itself, the minister did not give a clear answer about the country's intentions. She stressed that it is too early to talk about joining NATO.
