International organizations should put pressure on Putin to withdraw troops from the ZNPP – Bloomberg

In the zone of hostilities, any operation at a nuclear facility must be considered from the point of view of international law. That is, it should be a zone where any strikes and occupation are prohibited.

already six months in the occupation. Russian troops have militarized Europe's largest nuclear power plant and are thus exerting nuclear pressure on the entire civilized world. To resolve the situation, as well as to check the proper operation of all NPP systems, a mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency is heading to Zaporizhzhia.(IAEA). This is an important, but only the first step that the international community should take in the face of the nuclear threat provoked by Russia, reports Bloomberg.

At the beginning of March, the Russian occupying forces seized the ZaNPP and have been holding it ever since, according to the author of the article. for three main reasons.

First, the head of the Kremlin sees in this an opportunity to organize a protected bridgehead for constant attacks on Ukrainian positions, because he rightly expects that Ukraine will not strike its own nuclear facility.< /p>

Secondly, this situation makes it possible to create pressure on European society, which still remembers the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. And, conveniently, it eliminates the need to use nuclear weapons, because an explosion at the ZNPP could become a nuclear disaster anyway.

And thirdly, the Russian authorities are able to reduce Ukraine's power generation capacity by a staggering 20% by disconnecting the Zaporizhzhia NPP from the Ukrainian power system.

The potential consequences of a nuclear explosion in Energodar, both for Ukraine and for European countries, can be really terrible. Especially if you take into account that active hostilities are currently continuing, which significantly complicates the ability to quickly respond to the situation. Therefore, the international community must, despite all the difficulties, force Putin to withdraw troops from the ZANPP.

The first and main step, already partially implemented, the IAEA mission is already in Ukraine and should soon gain access to the nuclear power plant. The Russian side previously promised that it would allow an international mission into the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

“In the combat zone, any operation near a nuclear facility should be considered from the point of view of international law, as and a medical facility or religious center is a place where the ban on strikes and occupation is in effect,” the article says.

For this, it is necessary to transfer the enterprise under the control of an international mission headed by the UN and with the direct participation of the IAEA. Material and technical support can be provided by a neutral country, for example, India, which operates more than 20 reactors. To implement this plan, it is necessary to exert serious pressure on the leadership of the Russian Federation.

In connection with the situation, NATO is returning to the idea of a no-fly zone, at least within the territory around the nuclear plant. The possibility of introducing new sanctions against Russia, in particular in the energy sector, is not ruled out.
