Europeans are divided into “peace camps” and “justice camps”
< The results of the ECFR poll divide Europeans into two opposing groups: the Peace Camp (35% of people) , which wants the war to end as soon as possible, even if it means that Ukraine is making concessions, and the camp of “Justice” , which believes that only a clear defeat of Russia can bring peace and the goal is to punish Russia for its aggression and restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine (22%).
Another European (20% of respondents) refused to choose between a “peace” and “justice” camp, but still strongly supports EU action in response to Russia's war in Ukraine. Members of this group share the anti-Russian sentiments of the Justice Camp, but are also concerned about the escalation – like the Peace Camp.
It is noted that in the coming months, pressure will increase on this third group to get rid of the fence. Their views – and their voices – could be crucial in determining Europe's next steps.
ECFR research shows that while Europeans show strong solidarity with Ukraine and support sanctions against Russia, they are divided over long-term goals. In Italy (52% of respondents), Germany (49%), Romania (42%), France (41%), Sweden (38%) citizens support peace at the cost of concessions to Ukraine, while in Poland – 41% of citizens support the idea of justice.
In all countries except Poland, the Peace camp is larger than the Justice camp.
In Portugal, 31% are in favor of peace, 21% are in favor of justice and 30% are undecided. In the UK, 22% of citizens support peace and 21% are in favor of justice, and another 32% are undecided.
Ukraine now enjoys widespread global support in defending itself against Russian aggression. However, according to the Prime Minister of Finland Alexander Stubb, the situation may change very soon.
