In Switzerland, refugees will no longer be able to choose where to live

Ukrainians will be distributed among the cantons, taking into account the capabilities of the confederation

Switzerland is changing the system of accommodation of refugees from Ukraine – now they will not be able to choose where to live in the country, according to Swissinfo.

State Secretariat for Migration (SEM, a division of the Ministry Justice and Police) stated that the goal is to accommodate registered Ukrainian refugees, taking into account the possibilities of regions (cantons) on the basis of the principle of proportionality.

, and then distributes them to the cantons.

However, in the current situation of force majeure, such a system is under heavy load, and in fact – stopped working.

According to SEM spokesman David Keller, the growing number of refugees is Zurich, Basel and Bern, as well as the canton of Ticino.

Refugees prefer to settle in the most popular and developed regions. This practice will now be over.

Refugees and Swiss families who accept them will no longer be able to make their own decisions on the resettlement of those seeking protection from war.

However, it is noted that families and groups of refugees will be able to stay together. But everyone else will be resettled on the basis of government decisions, not according to their wishes.

If one of the refugees wants to change the canton, the cantonal government must agree, taking into account the principle of proportionality.

About 37,000 refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Switzerland since the beginning of the war. About half of them were housed in private households with the support of NGOs and individuals.

All but a few Ukrainian refugees have already acquired special migration status (S-type residence permit), which allows them to seek work and enroll in language courses.
