Cyprus and Greece do not support the accelerated process of Ukraine's accession to the EU – Euractiv

Countries want to see the European Commission's proposal first.

Greece and Cyprus support Ukraine's accession in the EU , but oppose the accelerated accession process proposed by several Eastern European countries, according to Euractiv.

Citing sources in the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Euractiv notes that Athens' position is that all procedures provided for in Article 49 of the EU Treaty. In addition, Greece attaches particular importance to the accession of the Western Balkans to the EU.

Asked whether Greece would agree to grant Ukraine candidate status in June, a source close to the issue said Athens wanted to see the European Commission's proposal first.

As for Cyprus, Euractiv sources in the government said to see in which direction the opinion of the European Commission will develop.

If positive, Cyprus will agree to a proposal to grant Ukraine candidate status. However, the source added that strict adherence to all relevant procedures is needed, so the accession process will be lengthy. reforms and fulfilling a number of commitments.
