Canada imposed sanctions against 43 Russian oligarchs

These measures were a response to Russia's “annexation” of four regions.

Canada introduces additional sanctions in connection with Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, including fictitious referendums and attempted annexation of the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. This is stated in the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France.

“President Putin's plans to annex Ukrainian territory have no legitimacy. His flagrant violations of international law are based on the imperial notion that his regime can redraw the map as it pleases. The vote in the Russian Federal Assembly to integrate Ukrainian territories is an attempt to formalize conquest President Putin with the help of political theater. This fictitious process will not change Canada's position. The borders will not change. The territory of Ukraine will remain with Ukraine,” the message reads.

In particular, Canada is introducing measures against 43 Russian oligarchs, representatives of the financial elites and their family members; the so-called governing body in Kherson; and 35 high-ranking officials supported by Russia in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

Building on similar measures that Canada has already introduced for Donetsk and Luhansk regions, certain business transactions in or with the Russian-occupied territories of Kherson and Zaporizhia regions are now prohibited, including investments and exports.

“While brave Ukrainians are pushing forward in a brave counter-offensive, President Putin is trying to annex Ukrainian territory in a cynical, desperate attempt to justify his senseless war. Canada and its international partners see these actions for what they really are: an attack on the rules-based international order and the principles of democracy. Thus, we confirm our unwavering commitment to Ukraine and its people. Canada has always supported Ukraine, and we will continue to do so as long as necessary,” said Melanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

After Russia's illegal occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea in 2014, Canada imposed sanctions on more than 1,800 individuals and legal entities. Many of these sanctions were implemented in coordination with Canada's allies and partners. After Russia's further invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Canada imposed sanctions on more than 1,400 individuals and legal entities from and from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
