The White House fears possible consequences.
The USA made a final decision not to designate Russia as strong>state sponsor of terrorism, the White House said on Tuesday.
When asked about this, US President Joe Biden told reporters on Monday that Moscow should not be included on the list, despite that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken previously said the US is exploring the move.
Although Ukraine has actively pushed for Russia to be recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism, White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said that Biden made the final decision on this.
“It is not the most effective and not the strongest way forward,” Jean-Pierre told reporters. “This step may have unforeseen consequences for Ukraine and the whole world,” she added, referring to food exports and the movement of ships through the Black Sea, Reuters reports.
Russia has publicly warned the Biden administration against the decision, saying it could completely sever diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Earlier this year, two US senators introduced a resolution to hold Russia accountable for its invasion of Ukraine.
< p>Adding a country to the list allows the US to impose more sanctions and limits US foreign aid to the country, as well as bans the export and sale of defense goods, among other things.
