The US president will hold a series of meetings ahead of the G20 summit.

US President Joe Biden arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodiato participate in a series of summits and meetings with Southeast Asian leaders. This is reported by CNN.

The meetings in Cambodia come ahead of next week's G20 summit in Indonesia, where Biden will meet personally with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings, along with the East Asian Summit, which is also being held in Cambodia, will give Biden a chance to talk to allies before sitting down to negotiate with Xi. In particular, Biden will hold a bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Biden has planned to strengthen the US role in the Indo-Pacific region since the beginning of his presidency, and his presence at the ASEAN and East Asian summits this weekend will highlight his work.

« He's coming to these summits with an accomplishment and a goal behind him, and he wants to use the next 36 hours to build on that foundation to move the American role forward and present a number of concrete, practical initiatives,” Sullivan said.

Among these practical initiatives, Sullivan said, are new initiatives on maritime cooperation, digital connectivity and economic investment.

The US president will also emphasize a “forward-looking stance” on regional defense, Sullivan added, to show that Washington is at the forefront of security cooperation.

There will also be a focus on Myanmar and discussions on coordinating actions to continue to increase pressure on the junta, which seized power from the country's democratically elected government in a coup in February 2021.

Four defining global threats accompany Biden's trip: Russia's war against Ukraine, escalating tensions with China, climate change and the potential for a global recession in the coming months. Other hot spots, such as North Korea's provocations and uncertainty over Iran's nuclear program, will also matter.

Biden will meet with the leaders of Japan and South Korea on Sunday, November 13, following North Korea's multiple weapons tests.

Japan and South Korea express concern over North Korea's missile tests, as well as the prospect of another nuclear weapons test. Sullivan suggested that the tripartite meeting would not lead to specific results, but rather to strengthening cooperation in the field of security against the backdrop of a number of threats.
