A single EU army will not be able to replace 27 separate armies, it makes no sense – Borrell

The head of European diplomacy believes that Europeans should develop national armed forces.

The countries of the European Union should be united and decisive in their position regarding the security challenges on the continent, but the creation of a joint army instead of the development of internal armed forces is currently impractical. The head of European diplomacy Joseph Borrell holds this opinion, Kronen Zeitung reports.

According to Borrell, funding and developing national armies is a far more effective way to keep Europe and the world safe than running a single army built on them.

“There is no need to create an EU army. None of the 27 armies can be replaced by a single European force. We just need to join forces, coordinate and invest better in defense. And nothing more. We spend as much on defense as China and four times more than Russia. As a result of the debt crisis, we entered the phase of disarmament. As a result, we cannot cope with the current challenges. The key word is efficiency. Otherwise, it's just a waste of money,” Borrell said.
