The German chancellor hopes for Beijing's influence.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking at a meeting of social -Democrats on Saturday, November 5, welcomed the agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping that nuclear escalation should be avoided amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The Chinese government, the president and I could declare that no nuclear weapons should be used in this war… – Only for this reason did this trip justify itself,” he said.
Scholz said after talks with Xi on Friday that he insisted that “Russia's war in Ukraine is a dangerous situation for the whole world” and called on Russia's ally Beijing to use its “influence” on Moscow to prevent escalation and stop the invasion .
The chancellor called Russia to account for nuclear threats:
“We call on Russia to clearly state that it will not do this. This will become a line that cannot be crossed.”
“Xi stressed the need for China and Germany, two major influential countries, worked together in times of change and instability and made greater contributions to global peace and development,” Beijing's Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.
This week, the White House said that repeated discussions by the Russian officials of the potential use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine raised fears in Washington that this could become a reality.
The German Chancellor became the first G7 leader to visit China since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The trip drew criticism in Germany and among European partners over Berlin's growing economic dependence on Beijing, and was also controversial because it came shortly after Xi consolidated his power in China just last month.
