Yachts of sanctioned Russians turn off identification system to avoid arrest – media

Crew members explain this with instructions from above.

Elite yachts associated with sanctioned Russian oligarchs began turning off the automatic location tracking system to avoid arrest. This was reported by The Guardian.

Thus, in the Caribbean Sea, they saw the yacht Alfa Nero, which is considered to be connected with the Russian billionaire Andrei Guryev, but it has not appeared on the systems of tracking the movement of maritime vehicles since March 3.

This is one of at least six yachts linked to Russian oligarchs under British sanctions that hid their whereabouts.

An analysis of AIS data showed that they had been missing for more than a month:

72-meter yacht Clio, which is associated with billionaire Oleg Deripaska. The last time she reported her location was on April 18 from the Black Sea, near Sochi and Novorossiysk;

The 70-meter Galactica Super Nova is linked to oligarch Vagit Alekperov, the former head of Lukoil. The last time she reported on March 2 was off the coast of Croatia;

The 140-meter Ocean Victory, linked to oligarch Viktor Rashnikov, did not appear in the system after March 1, when it was moored in the Maldives;

Investigative journalists managed to reach communication with one of the crew members of the yacht belonging to the sanctioned oligarch. He said they had been instructed to hide the location.

As previously reported, in the port of Lautoka in Fiji, local police detained an Amadea yacht worth $ 325 million . It probably belongs to a Russian senator and one of the oligarchs close to dictator Vladimir Putin, Suleiman Kerimov.
