There is a shortage of individual seasonal products in some regions.
There is no shortage of food in Ukraine today, but logistics is disrupted, which is also the main reason for rising prices. Oleg Pendzin, a member of the Economic Discussion Club, told Segodnya about this.
, logistical problems of product delivery from one region to another. Because of the checkpoints, because of the danger, the presence of explosive devices. And the price of food, in particular the same vegetables, varies from region to region, “Pendzin said.
Thus, traditionally in Ukraine all early vegetables are grown either in greenhouses or imported from abroad. Early cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, new potatoes came from Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Poland. All this is not available for Ukraine today, because the Black Sea ports are blocked. In some cases, goods are imported in bypass through other countries, so the cost of them increases.
“When we talk about the objective increase in prices for early vegetables, which have traditionally been either imported or greenhouse in Ukraine, we understand that today in Transcarpathia there is no greenhouse, neither in the Kherson region, nor in the Zaporozhye region early vegetables of this year will not be. There are problems with Nikolaevshchina, Odessa region. Despite the fact that the government, in order to provide Ukrainians with traditional vegetables, in May-June called for planting vegetables in backyards, in particular, proposes to change the flowers there for vegetables. It's not just that. The government is aware that today, firstly, logistical routes are complicated, and secondly, the places of production of those vegetables have problems. Traditionally, our vegetable group is in the Kherson region, but today it is under occupation, “the expert said.
And yet, he said, much will depend on logistics.
“We do not know how long the war will last, how many more bridges and roads Ukraine will lose, and this is logistics. If the bridge is blown up, the logistical route of delivery of the same chicken or potatoes is one and a half times longer. It's money, fuel, a lot of additional overhead. And all this is included in the price, “the expert added.
Bread may also rise in price, warns Pendzin. Due to the war, Ukraine was unable to export grain abroad. Now the world's grain prices have jumped by 70% compared to last year due to the fact that Ukraine can not supply products. As soon as our ports are unlocked and the grain goes abroad, our prices will rise.
“While the ports are blocked, Ukraine does not export, the world price is rising. As soon as the grain goes, the price of grain inside the country will start to rise, it will level off. In the world it will fall, and in our country it will go up. That is, there will be a serious basis for rising bread prices. This year the structure of sown areas will change very much. They will sow what will give more income than traditionally. That is, the NBU expects inflation to be somewhere around 20%. I agree. The food group will grow by exactly 22-23% in a year, “Pendzin explained.
It will be recalled that the war in Ukraine has worsened the situation of 1.7 billion people to one degree or another. worldwide, a third of whom were still living below the poverty line.
, which will lead to famine, mass migration and political instability. This was reported by the New York Times. all over the world. But due to Russia's war against Ukraine, the supply chain has been disrupted and ports cannot operate properly near the center of the war zone.
