The Biden administration has faced criticism from Iranian-American activists, who are calling on the White House to abandon the idea of reviving the Iran nuclear deal amid protests in the country.
The reason for mass protests in Iran was the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, Gina Mahsa. Amini, who was arrested by the so-called morality police because her hair was visible from under her hijab. The woman died in police custody on September 16. After her death, thousands of people demonstrated against the repressive course and the Islamic system of government. Later a 16-year-old Iranian girl, Niki Shakarami, was the victim of Iranian security forces.
Protests quickly spread across Iran and were met with a harsh crackdown by the government, including beatings, arrests, and killings of demonstrators. The United States and other democratic countries condemned the suppression of the protests and Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the riots were organized by “Iran's sworn enemies and their allies” – the United States and Israel.
