We met several times a day and I lied to them a little that everything was fine – how hospitals on the front line experienced the first days of the war

Some of the nurses left, and some lived with their families at work.

In the first days of the war in the regions where there were active hostilities, and medical facilities were attacked almost daily, there was a significant outflow of medical personnel. The burden on those who remained increased and they actually lived in hospitals, writes Alla Kotlyar in her article “Hospitals on the line of contact: the first months of work.”

“I am glad now that at that time we did not know about the atrocities in Bucha and everything that was happening in Kyiv region. Because if they knew, I'm afraid, everything would be a little different. Many of my team were on the verge of, so to speak, fluctuations. But almost the whole team was. Units left with children “, – the director of the Ascension multidisciplinary hospital of the Nikolaev area Vladimir Krasyokha told.

He noted that doctors actually lived in the hospital building.

” Several times a day we met in a circle, and I told them (sometimes lied a little) that everything was fine. They believed because they thought I had more access to information. The doctors were walking, and I saw their faces change, they calmed down a bit. Many of them were on the verge of fleeing or not, ”he recalls.

The head of the Kharkiv Regional Perinatal Center, Iryna Kondratova, says that 30% of obstetricians and gynecologists who worked before the war remained with her.

“And 7 doctors who came here on February 25, partly with their families. , with children. They stayed here and provided medical care around the clock. Some of them lost their homes. It was a little better with neonatal service. But there were not enough doctors either, ”she said of the situation at the beginning.

In particular, doctors had to work as surgeons, dressing nurses, who also did not remain.

“The first month and a half were very difficult. Especially when bombed from planes. Nevertheless, we worked, ”added Kondratova.

She says that she tried her best to support and motivate employees with the usual things from a peaceful life, such as manicures or flowers.

“There are regions where there are no health workers left. These are small villages from which, for example, elderly people do not want to leave. Then the neighboring primary school joins in and tries to go to them, despite all the threats, “said Natalia Budyak, director of the Eastern Department of the National Health Insurance Fund.

are conscripts. The medical specialty is included in the List № 711, ie currently conscripts, as well as other medical workers.
