UN wants to extend grain deal for another year and unblock Russian ammonia exports – Reuters

The agreement expires at the end of November.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and his team work on the expansion and extension for one year of the UN-brokered agreement, which allows the export of Ukrainian grain from the Black Sea region, which may expire at the end of November.

“We are trying to remove the uncertainty so that people say publicly that 'yes, it will be extended for another year,' but we are not there yet,” said UN official Stephane Dujarric, adding that UN officials are also working to facilitate exports of Russian grain and fertilizer.

Dujarric told reporters that UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths and top UN trade representative Rebecca Greenspan would travel to Moscow in about a week to discuss both issues with senior Russian officials.

“The Secretary General and his team are in intensive contact on these issues. Mr. Guterres and his team are working diligently to expand the Black Sea Grain Initiative,” he said. “They are actively working to remove the last hurdles to facilitate Russian grain and fertilizer exports,” Reuters reports. Nations and Turkey on July 22, which also resumed the supply of grain and fertilizers from the Black Sea to Ukraine.

Russia has criticized the deal, complaining that its exports will continue to be hampered. Moscow may object to the extension of the deal, which allows Ukrainian exports beyond the end of November.

The deal included ammonia, a key ingredient in nitrate fertilizers. A pipeline transporting ammonia from Russia's Volga region to Ukraine's Black Sea port of Pivdenyi was shut down when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

The United Nations is currently trying to get ammonia exports to resume.

Ukraine and Russia are key world exporters of grain and fertilizers. The United Nations has said a deal on exports from Russia and Ukraine is needed to tackle the global food crisis, which it says has been exacerbated by Russia's war in Ukraine, leaving some 47 million people in a state of “acute hunger”.
