Ukrainian refugees can enter German colleges without a certificate of completion

And students of Ukrainian universities will be able to continue their studies at German universities without exams and supporting documents.

Despite the fact that the presence school certificate is one of the prerequisites for studying at a German university, an exception was made for Ukrainian refugees in Germany, and this is good news for Ukrainians, writes DW.

The innovation applies to those who studied last year at a school in Ukraine, but due to the Russian military invasion were unable to pass final exams and obtain a certificate, as well as those who began studying at a Ukrainian university but for the same reason did not finish the first year. p>

According to the rules in force in Germany, only those applicants whose education formally corresponds to the German Maturity Certificate (Abitur) can apply to a German university. As German students study for 12-13 years, ie longer than students in Ukraine, the missing years must be compensated. In particular, Ukrainians with a certificate of complete general secondary education must study for an additional year either at a university in their homeland or at a pre-university college in Germany – and only then do they acquire the right to higher education at a German university.

An important condition for admission was the presence of a certificate from the national university and school certificate. Now, according to the decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Culture of the federal states of Germany, an exception has been made for those who fled the war in Ukraine. Even without a document, first-year students can apply for a place to study directly at a German university. Entrance exams are usually absent, but knowledge of German is required if the specialty is not English. And eleventh-graders can enter a college of pre-university training without a certificate.

The German-language Studienkolleg is a kind of preparatory course for applicants who have graduated from a school in a non-EU country. Here they help to restructure the German education system, improve the knowledge of German and specialized subjects to the level necessary to start studying.

Most colleges are public. Tuition is mostly free: students pay only a semester fee – about 170-300 euros per semester. Teaching is in German, so you need to know it at least at the B1 level. To enroll in college, you must pass an entrance test in German or a profile subject. The list of colleges can be found here.

To facilitate access to education for Ukrainian refugees and in solidarity with a full-scale war , suffering from Ukraine, unleashed by Russia against Ukraine, a number of German universities have created additional study places for Ukrainians, established scholarships, organized free language courses.
