Three members of the Visegrad Four canceled a meeting in Budapest

The countries are outraged by Hungary's position on the war in Ukraine.

The Visegrad Four defense ministers will not meet in Budapest, as Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have refused to participate due to Hungary's position on the war in Ukraine.

“Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak confirmed at a meeting of the National Security Council that he will not participate in the meeting of the defense ministers of the Visegrad Group countries in Budapest,” Polish MP Krzysztof Gavkowski told PAP.

Earlier, Czech Defense Minister Jan Chernohova announced the cancellation of the trip. She said she did not want to run in Hungary and criticized the country's approach to the war.

“I have always supported the Visegrad Four, and I am very sorry that cheap Russian oil is now more important to Hungarian politicians than Ukrainian blood,” she wrote on Twitter.

Euractiv reported that the Slovak Defense Minister would not be present at the meeting either. However, Slovak Deputy Defense Minister Wojciech Skurkiewicz said that “what is happening around the Visegrad Four is not a cause for optimism.”

The day before, on Sunday, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, said that, speaking about the rejection of Russian energy, the Ukrainian side demanded a “complete shutdown of the Hungarian economy.”

Hungary also actively opposes the closure of the skies over Ukraine, the imposition of additional sanctions against Russia and the introduction of a peacekeeping mission.
